FAQs

Are NAMTA and AMI the same organization?

No. NAMTA is an affiliate organization of the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI), but joining NAMTA does not make you a member of AMI.

Are all Montessori schools private?

No. Approximately 200 public schools in the U.S. and Canada offer Montessori programs, and this number is growing every year.

Are Montessori children successful later in life?

Research studies show that Montessori children are well prepared for later life academically, socially, and emotionally. In addition to scoring well on standardized tests, Montessori children are ranked above average on such criteria as following directions, turning in work on time, listening attentively, using basic skills, showing responsibility, asking provocative questions, showing enthusiasm for learning, and adapting to new situations.

Are Montessori schools religious?

Some are, but most are not. Some Montessori schools, just like other schools, operate under the auspices of a church, synagogue, or diocese, but most are independent of any religious affiliation.

Can I do Montessori at home with my child?

Only a trained Montessori teacher can properly implement Montessori education, using the specialized learning equipment of the Montessori “prepared environment.” Moreover, the social development that comes from being in an environment with other children is an integral part of Montessori education.

However, Montessori philosophy and practices have much to offer homeschooling parents.

All parents can use Montessori principles of child development at home, complementing your child’s experiences in Montessori school. Look at your home through your child’s eyes. Children need a sense of belonging, and they get it by participating fully in the routines of everyday life. “Help me do it by myself” is the life theme of the preschooler. Providing opportunities for independence is the surest way to build your child’s self-esteem. The NAMTA publication At Home with Montessori describes ways to use Montessori philosophy in the home environment.

How do I find Montessori schools in my area?

NAMTA publishes The NAMTA Directory each year in April. The directory lists schools that have paid a small fee for a listing. You can search for schools in the online school directory or you can purchase a print version.

Dear NAMTA Members and Followers,

Our operations are currently being moved to Seattle from Ohio. During this rather untimely transition, we appreciate your graciousness.

Our membership requests are currently backlogged, but will be processed once we return from Dallas. If you are purchasing a ticket for Dallas and desire the member rate, we still have the ability to verify existing and new memberships.

All ad requests will also be addressed post-conference.

Store order fulfillment will also be delayed as we set up our new store. We anticipate our store re-opening in December. If you have submitted an order in the past two weeks, that you need right away, please contact us for a refund. If you are able to wait until December, we would be happy to send your order at that time. We understand that this is a less than ideal situation and apologize for the inconvenience.

And if you are still interested in coming to Dallas, but have not yet purchased your ticket -- we are offering a special discount. 3 tickets for the price of 2! This is a $330 savings! To take advantage of this discount please go to: https://namta.typeform.com/to/BJjDdD

If you have any questions in the meantime, please reach us at staff@montessori-namta.org or 206-919-6349

Hope to see you all in Dallas!
