Over and above the identity of the Montessori adolescent, the nature of his “great work,” and the transition from childhood to adulthood, growing into adulthood is the real test of character and development. The human personality remains an enigma as each individual life evolves. The adolescent learns who he is and what his social mission might be in keeping with his personal interests and experiences. The growth and integration of his body and mind must be understood in light of Montessori’s deep integration of head and hands and her emphasis on healthy social, moral, and cognitive outcomes and high expectations. Without clear understanding of the adolescent individual personality in a community, it is impossible to optimize the learning experiences within the unique prepared environments like farm schools and urban centers.
